Making Rottnest Island accessible to all visitors

Accessibility for all visitors to Rottnest Island is important to the Foundation, which is why we secured a grant from the State Government to fund an All-terrain wheelchair and walker.

People with disability can now enjoy more of Western Australia's iconic Rottnest Island thanks to the new All-terrain Wheelchair and Walker. They are available for loan free of charge and able to be pre-booked through Pedal and Flipper Hire on the island.

The All-terrain Wheelchair and Walker will be used initially at Thomson Bay at the main settlement area with plans to provide the equipment for use at other beaches in the future.

"People with disability will be able enjoy what the island has to offer and provide more opportunities to participate in recreation activities - aswell making Rottnest even more attractive to the lucrative accessible tourism market.”

Disability Services Minister Don Punch

"This is excellent progress to offer an All-terrain wheelchair to even further widen the accessibility for even more people to enjoy the island's stunning beaches."

Tourism Minister Roger Cook

“It is bloody fantastic, this opens up a new dimension for people with disabilities, being able to get in the water and be with your kids and family is fantastic. A lot of people with disabilities are happy to travel, happy to spend money, providing they can get access.”

Rottnest and Disabilities Advocate Graham Edwards

Thank you to Disability Service Minister Hon Don Punch MLA for announcing the availability and significance of the chair and walker. A big thanks also to long time Foundation supporter, Graham Edwards AM, trialling the new equipment with such finesse.

Bookings for the equipment is online through the Rottnest Island Authority website https://www.rottnestisland.com/pedalandflipper

It can also be made through the Rottnest Island Visitor Centre or in person at Pedal and Flipper.
