Graham Edwards AM presents on Accessible Tourism at Rottnest After Dark

Congratulations to the Rottnest Island Chamber of Commerce for putting together the wonderful Rottnest After Dark event on Friday 8 March 2024.

Attended by many key Rottnest Island supporters including Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti MLA, Federal Member for Fremantle Josh Wilson, and State Member for Fremantle Simone McGurk, the event provided an exciting opportunity to discuss future plans and opportunities for Wadjemup with key politicians and stakeholders.

The keynote address was by our own Graham Edwards AM who spoke passionately about Accessible Tourism and the future possibilities on Wadjemup.

He noted that recent figures have shown there are nearly 4.5 million people in Australian with a disability.  Destinations that have access plans for people in wheelchairs are in effect making access easier for everyone, particularly older tourists. Given that the number of older Australians is predicted to double to nearly 25% of our population, Rottnest needs to ensure accessibility is considered with all future development plans in mind.  “Be they paths, buildings, or of a social nature, if they are not accessible, they are not acceptable.”

The Rottnest Foundation champions accessibility in all projects we support on the Island and commend the Rottnest Island Authority and RI businesses that have shown a commitment to accessible services.

This wonderful event was supported by Rottnest Express, the exceptional new restaurant bar at the Basin Havza and our favorite RIGin.
