Wadjemup Bidi Walk Trail
The Wadjemup Bidi is a 45 km network of trails that promotes public access and connection to Rottnest Island.
To date the Rottnest Foundation has contributed over
$1 million towards the implementation of this project.
Consisting of 5 interconnected trails Gabbi Karniny, Karlinyah, Ngank Wen, Ngank Yira and Wardan Nara, the Wadjemup Bidi follows the natural landscape of Wadjemup, guiding visitors to the many heritage and cultural landmarks around the island, as well as its iconic beaches and outlooks rich in natural wonder.
The Bidi is our greatest achievement to date. The creation of the Wadjemup Bidi has facilitated the protection of the island’s unique environment by preventing compaction, erosion, the trampling of vegetation and the disruption of delicate ecosystems and fauna, including the quokka and the many native birds that make Rottnest their home.
As visitation to Rottnest increases, the sustainability impact of the Wadjemup Bidi continues to grow, helping to conserve Wadjemup for future generations.
The Wadjemup Bidi project was funded through partnerships and grants from BHP, Lotterywest, Commonwealth Tourism Demand Driver Infrastructure Program; delivered by Tourism WA, Department of Sport and Recreation, and the Department of Parks and Wildlife. Community and volunteer groups played a fundamental role in the construction of the Bidi trail, with their travel to and from the island provided by Rottnest Express.
Wadjemup Bidi Walk Trail Expansion
The Wadjemup Bidi Project was officially completed in 2018, however additions and extensions to the trail have continued as required. In 2024 the Rottnest Foundation committed to partner with the Rottnest Island Authority on the Wadjemup Bidi Walk Trail Expansion, with the aim of developing more accessible sections for visitors of all abilities, additional interpretation signage, additional connections between the trails and options for overnight shelters at limited sites on existing trails.
We are seeking both individual donations and partnerships with corporate and philanthropic organisations to deliver this project. Please contact us to find out more.
