Specialised Planting

In addition to ongoing support of the Woodlands Restoration, the Rottnest Foundation initiated two planting projects in locations with specialised environmental needs.

Queen’s Jubilee Commemorative Tree Planting Project

This project was to mark the significant occasion of Her Majesty's Jubilee Celebration and involved the planting of 10 semi-mature native trees (Melaleuca lanceolata and Callitris preissii) to provide protection from the weather, shade, habitat for fauna, and improve the presentation at the start of the Ngank Yira Bidi walk trail behind the Kingstown Barracks heritage site and accommodation.

The ten trees, were grown at the Rottnest Island plant nursery, managed by the Rottnest Island Environmental Team.

This project was funded by a grant from the Department of Agriculture, water and the environment. Planting undertaken in partnership with representatives of the other volunteer organisations on the Island; Rottnest Volunteer Guides Association, Winnits, Birdlife WA, and Rottnest Society and overseen by RIA Environmental Team.

Saltmarsh rehabilitation at Herschel Lake

This planting focused on salt lake rehabilitation at Herschel Lake.  The aim of the project was to increase habitat for migratory shorebirds, improve wetland buffer functions and deter pedestrian/cyclist access, which is a key threat to the microbial communities that are supported by the salt lakes on Rottnest which are listed as ‘Wetlands of National Importance’.

Planting was undertaken by Rottnest Foundation volunteer members who planted approximately 3,000 saltmarsh species. These included Tectiornia halocnemoides and Tectiornia indica (samphire) on the low-lying areas close to the water-line and Ficinia nodosa, Rhadogia baccata and Melaleuca lanceolata on the higher ground. The plants are propagated on the island by the Rottnest Island Nursery volunteers, resulting in a higher survival rate.

The project has been made possible by a Community Environment Program Grant, administered by the Federal Department of Industry, Innovation and Science and was allocated by the Federal Member for Fremantle Josh Wilson MP.
