Alinta Energy expanding Wadjemup Woodlands

This November we hosted a team of volunteers from Alinta Energy to undertake the Tree Guard removal as part of the Woodland Restoration project.

The Woodland Restoration and Expansion Project provides the opportunity to contribute to securing plant habitat for the wildlife of Rottnest Island by revegetating the island's important woodlands. Majority of Rottnest Island / Wadjemup Woodland is not naturally regenerating and requires management action/intervention.

Tree guards are essential for improving the survival rate of new plants and trees which are vulnerable to external forces, particularly our herbivorous quokkas, until the plants are mature enough to sustain this type of damage.

Tree guards are the preferred option of plant protection by the RIA as they are a reusable product, used across the Island to support revegetation works. Tree guard removal is therefore an ongoing operational requirement as the tree guards are a temporary measure, used to protect new plantings.

The woodland restoration project supports community engagement and learning as well as ‘on island’ participation.

This is the 3rd consecutive year the Rottnest Foundation has partnered with Alinta Energy and we look forward to many more years of partnering together to support the restoration and rehabilitation of Rottnest Island / Wadjemup’s beautiful woodland habitat.
