A morning at Kingstown Barracks
At the beginning of August we were excited to welcome a wonderful mix of new friends and supporters to Wadjemup for a volunteer planting day at Kingstown Barracks. We were joined by a group of Consuls and Consular staff based here in Perth, representatives from Skål International Perth, and some of the team from Frankie's on Rotto. Our Board Member Holly Brindle also joined us for her first planting day.
We gathered at a site next to Governors Circle, where the group planted an extraordinary 560 coastal seedlings in just 3 hours, a fantastic effort that will make a real difference to this stretch of shoreline.
These plantings are part of the Rottnest Foundation's Woodland and Coastal Restoration Project, which is working in partnership with the Rottnest Island Authority Environment Team, to replant 53 hectares of the native trees and plants, including melaleuca, wattle and spinifex, that once blanketed the island. We are working to restore habitat lost to grazing and historic land clearing and helping stabilise vulnerable coastal dunes for generations to come.
Days like this are a great reminder of what's possible when people give their time to a place they care about, 560 seedlings, three hours, and a coastline a little closer to how it once was.
New dates for the 2027 planting season will be released soon. If you are interested in volunteering yourself or for a work team, get in touch, we'd love to hear from you.
