The Rottnest Foundation is proud to support the development of a Coastal Walk Trail on Rottnest Island.  The Trail will provide access to the Island's many beautiful natural features and an insight into its wealth of cultural history.

After contributing just under $50,000 towards Stage II - Site Development Plan of the Coastal Walk Trail back in May 2010, by way of a joint contribution of a Lotterywest Grant and Foundation funds, we are now seeing the first section of the West End Node of the Trail nearing completion.

West End Boardwalk Upgrade:

The Foundation has committed $200,000 to the redevelopment of the West End Boardwalk, which was recently dismantled due to safety concerns and risk to the colony of shearwaters that build their nesting burrows underground at West End each year.  The new Boardwalk and viewing platform incorporates an environmentally sustainable design, built from low maintenance recycled materials.  Interpretative signage along the Boardwalk will provide an insight into this wild and spectacular landscape.  The Boardwalk will be open to Island visitors prior to Christmas.

The Rottnest Foundation is now inviting corporate involvement to complete the West End Node of the Coastal Walk Trail.  You can also contribute towards this significant project by making a donation through the Foundation.  All donations over $2.00 are tax deductible.

The Coastal Walk Trail

The Trail will traverse the coastal dunes and limestone cliffs which fringe Rottnest Island as well as pass through the settlements of Thomson, Geordie and Longreach Bays and across the centre of the Island.

The Trail will manage the conflict between visitor pressures and environmental values.  It will reduce human impact on the coastal dune systems, allow rehabilitation of existing erosion areas and potential erosion prone sites whilst enhancing the visitors' experience through various trail experiences highlighting environmental, historical and cultural significance.
