Our Projects
The Rottnest Foundation has contributed towards many environmental conservation and heritage projects on the Island.
Projects currently being supported include:
- Rottnest Island Coastal Walk Trail:
Currently our most ambitious project is to contribute towards the construction of a Coastal Walk Trail around Rottnest Island. To date the Foundation has contributed close to $50,000 from its own funding and a Lotterywest Grant towards Stage II of the Site Development Plan.
- West End Boardwalk Upgrade:
The Rottnest Foundation has committed $200,000 to the redevelopment of the West End Boardwalk, which was recently dismantled due to safety concerns and risk to the colony of shearwaters that burrow in underground nests each year at West End. Built from low maintenance sustainable materials, the new boardwalk and interpretative signage provides an insight into this beautiful part of the Island.
The Foundation is now seeking corporate involvement to complete the West End Node of the Coastal Walk Trail.
Past projects include:
- Reafforestation project, including a 100 hectare fencing program to propagate and plant hundreds of thousands of indigenous trees on the Island's denuded areas.
- Contributed towards the cost of the boardwalk in front of the Thomson Bay Tearooms.
- Funded the restoration and refurbishment of a building at the Kingstown Barracks for the establishment of a ‘Discovery Centre’. The Centre is used as an education facility to raise awareness of Rottnest's unique environment to visitors and school children.
- Refurbishment of the World War II Battery Observation Post at Signal Ridge on Wadjemup Hill through a successful LotteryWest grant.
- Funding by gifts for Memorial Park Benches around Thomson Bay.
If you would like to contribute to any of these projects, you can either make a donation or become a member of the Rottnest Foundation.
