$5000 Donation received from the Margaret River Chocolate Company

A huge thank you to the Margaret River Chocolate Company for their kind donation of $5000 which was presented to Pat Barblett Vice Chair of the Rottnest Foundation by Martin Black Co-Owner of the Margaret River Chocolate Company  at a Quokka Symposium held at the Fremantle Maritime Museum Thursday 30th of March. The Margaret River Chocolate Company launched the ‘Chokka the Quokka’ initiative  mid 2016, and part proceeds from every quokka sold is donated to the Rottnest Foundation to support Quokka conservation on Rottnest and throughout WA. Quokka Symposium – 29th March 2017

A big congratulations and thank you to the Rottnest Island Authority for organising and delivering an outstanding Quokka Symposium. It was held at the Fremantle Maritime Museum and a broad range of quokka devotees from researchers to conservationists contributed to and were highly engaged in the event. The following people were speakers at the event; Walter McGuire- Traditional Owner – Welcome to Country Shane Kearney- RIA – Quokka Management Brad Barton – DPAW- Quokka Status Across the State Martin Black- Margaret River Chocolate Company – Chocolate Quokka Fundraising Initiative Pat Barblett- Rottnest Foundation – ‘Conserving the essence of Rottnest’ Peter Spencer- Murdoch Uni – Managing Quokkas through Forensic DNA Profiling Karlene Bain – DPAW- South West Management & Research Trish Fleming – Murdoch Uni- Quokka Food Preferences Veronica Phillips – UWA – Rottnest Population Dynamics Knowledge was shared and gained, increasing all stakeholders’ ability to best manage the Quokka populations on Rottnest and the mainland. Funding for quokka management was boosted by the Margaret River Chocolate Factory donating $5,000 to the Rottnest Foundation, which the Foundation will put back into Quokka conservation and research in WA. The Rottnest Island Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Parliamentary Friends of Tourism held their annual ‘Rottnest After Dark’ event on Friday evening 17th March 2017. Once again it was a fabulous networking event; where community group members, business owners and Government officials mingled and celebrated the growth of Tourism in WA together! Wadjemup Aboriginal Reference Group – Inaugural Meeting – 10 March 2017

The Rottnest Island Authority (RIA) has recently appointed a Wadjemup Aboriginal Reference Group (WARG) who will be actively engaged with Aboriginal Heritage projects on Rottnest Island and will play an important role in providing cultural advice and guidance for the appropriate conservation of the Wadjemup Aboriginal Burial Ground. WARG Members are Barbara Bynder, Brendan Moore, Lindsay Dean, Pamela Thorley and Walter McGuire. A welcome dinner was held for members of the WARG on Thursday 9th of May 2017, hosted by the RIA. Rosie (Rottnest Foundation Grants & Sponsorship Coordinator) attended this dinner and was also invited to formally present to the WARG at their first meeting on Thursday 10th March regarding Rottnest Foundation’s connection and involvement with the Aboriginal Burial Ground project and partnership with Lotterywest. Rottnest Foundation has been successful in receiving a Lotterywest Community Spaces Grant of $500,440 which will contribute towards the conservation of the Aboriginal Burial Ground.     The London Chapter of the Rottnest Foundation has been resurrected and a Committee has been formed, headed by Sandy Barblett, son of Pat Barblett A.M. who is Founder of the Rottnest  Foundation and current Vice Chair.
