First Installation of the Wadjemup Bidi. The NEW West End Boardwalk

The new West End Boardwalk was completed and opened by the Minister Hon. Dr Kim Hames and Mrs Janet Holmes a Court, AC, the Rottnest Foundation’s Patron in February 2012 and forms the official first installment of the Wadjemup Bidi Project for the Island. The previous boardwalk was removed in 2010 after inspection by a structural engineer who recommended extensive remedial works due to weakening of the footings due to Shearwater burrowing. The old boardwalk was replaced with a low maintenance, low impact, and engineered design that used sustainable materials including recycled plastics. The new structure minimised the boardwalk’s footprint to reduce impacts on nesting shearwater birds whilst providing a recreational experience. Interpretive signage, binoculars for whale and bird watching opportunities and lookouts were installed to meet visitor expectations. The Rottnest Foundation contributed $200,000 towards this new West End Boardwalk. Ironically, the West End Boardwalk was the first segment of the trail project to be built and ended up being located on the last section of the  trail project to be implemented, the Ngank Wen Bidi. The northern part of the Ngank Wen Bidi section is being partly funded by a $210,000 grant that has been given to the Rottnest Foundation from the Commonwealth Tourism Demand Driver Infrastructure (TDDI) Program which is managed by Tourism WA. The remaining southern section is due to be implemented in the next few years (subject to acquiring funding). Once built, visitors will be able to walk in a circuit and explore the west side of the Island. If you would like to become a funding partner in the delivery of the Wadjemup Bidi project to help complete this section, please contact our Grants & Sponsorship Coordinator, Rosie, on 0447 853 820 or [email protected] The West Australian, Article ‘First steps for track around island’,15th February...
